What is space docking?
Any spacecraft in space rotates in an orbit. In the process of space docking, two spacecraft are brought into the same orbit. Then they are brought close to each other and joined together. If you want to understand this with an example, then you must have heard about the International Space Station, which is in a way a spacecraft. Whenever a new team of astronauts goes there, a spacecraft is launched from Earth and docked with the ISS, only then the astronauts are able to reach there.
What are the functions of space docking?
Through space docking, astronauts are docked with other spacecraft in space. Space docking is also used to deliver supplies to them. Apart from this, space docking technology was adopted while building the ISS itself. China has also built its space station by doing this. The modules of space stations in both the countries were launched at different times and then they were connected in space.
What is the benefit to India from space docking?
India will get the first benefit of space docking in Chandrayaan-4 mission. Under Chandrayaan-4 mission, India wants to collect samples from the Moon and bring them to Earth. Scientists plan to land a spacecraft on the Moon and dock it with a rocket, which will bring lunar samples to Earth.
